Theres no such place like cinema. Despite the increasingly advanced technology of home theater, cinema is still the best "home" for the feast for the eyes to see the movie. The italian movie Cinema Paradiso (1988) will be a timeless masterpiece to remind us of that. Directed by italiano director Giuseppe Tornatore, Paradiso gained many worldwide success, the most prestigious one is The Oscar for The Best Foreign Language Film (Italy) in 1990.
Sicily is ain't just about the origins of Don and Mafioso, within Paradiso Tornatore tried to prove that there are passion, (unfinished) romance and the wonderful friendship too in that island. Portrayal of true friendship well represented between Alfredo, played by frenchman Philippe Noiret and his much younger fella, Salvatore De Vita / Toto, starred by three actors: Salvatore Cascio (Child), Marco Leonardi (Teenager) and Jacques Perrin (Adult). The chemistry between two of them is built by the same passion, theater's projectionist.
The story itself focused on Toto's life journey including his poor love story with Elena Mendola, played by Agnese Nano. His dream to be projectionist becomes true after Alfredo teach him to operate projector. Then comes rich man Spaccaficco, played by Enzo Cannavale, the man who will bring a change to sicilian people, the man who built Cinema Paradiso.
My first love to Cinema Paradiso was "The Love Theme", a very beautiful score by Ennio Morricone. The music blends perfectly with the story.
In Indonesia, there is a movie that inspired much by Cinema Paradiso, it's "Janji Joni" (2005), a comedy drama directed by Joko Anwar (Pintu Terlarang, Kala).
I rate the movie 8.9 out of 10. Bellisimo :')
